Fun with watersports doesn't stop when Summer ends. Winter offers an opportunity to get out on the water for exercise, mental wellness, to get some much-needed fresh air, and see nature from a completely different perspective.
Choose calm winter days for stunning light, quiet beaches, peaceful rivers and unforgettable paddles.
Our winter paddleboarding guide takes you through advice and considerations before you head out on some adventures.

Dress for the cold
Winter sea temperatures in the UK drop to around 6-10°C, and river temperatures are even lower, which means you need to consider the risk of cold water shock. You can prepare yourself for the cold by wearing appropriate clothing. Wear a 5/4mm+ wetsuit or dry suit with thermal layers. Add neoprene boots, gloves, and a hood or beanie to prevent heat loss.

Safety first
Our water safety advice applies all year round (please read it in full).
Check Conditions First
- Review the weather or marine forecast for wind, waves, and tides.
- Avoid offshore winds and large swells.
- Paddle in daylight hours and stay close to shore.
Plan & Prepare
- Never go alone - or at least tell someone your route.
- Carry a waterproof phone case, whistle, or VHF radio.
- Launch from sheltered bays or estuaries rather than the open sea.
Paddle Smart
- Warm up before and after your session.
- If you fall in, don't panic; get back on your board quickly.
- Know the signs of cold water shock and hypothermia

Winter paddleboard on rivers and inland waters
Rivers and inland waters are ideal for winter paddleboarding. They're generally calmer, quieter, more sheltered, and offer some stunning scenery and wildlife at this time of year. There are many more safe launching spots for easy accessibility to the water, and coming out again.

Winter paddleboarding in the sea
Sea paddleboarding in winter is much better suited to experienced paddleboarders. But, if you do, stick to calm seas, stay close to the shore and, because of the lack of summer crowds, you're more likely to have some interesting wildlife encounters.
